The scams we see most

If any of these sound familiar, you're not being paranoid — and you're definitely not the only one.

“Your account is locked — click here to verify”

Almost always phishing. Banks, Amazon, Apple and Netflix don't send links demanding you log in right away. Open the app or type the website in yourself instead of tapping the link.

“Your computer has a virus — call this number”

Always fake. A real virus warning never gives you a phone number. That number reaches the scammer, who will ask to control your computer. Close the tab, or hold the power button until the machine shuts off.

A grandchild calls in trouble and needs money quietly

This is the grandparent scam, and AI can now copy a familiar voice from a few seconds of audio — so sounding exactly right proves nothing. Hang up and call that person back on the number you already have.

“You owe an unpaid toll / delivery fee”

A text with a link and a small urgent fee is nearly always a scam. The tiny amount is bait to capture your card details.

Anyone asking for gift cards, wire transfer, crypto, or cash

No real company or government agency is ever paid this way. An unusual payment method combined with urgency is fraud essentially every time.

“We refunded you too much — send the difference back”

A refund or overpayment story is always a scam. The original deposit is fake or will be reversed; the money you send back is real.
